I saw this book on a list of 100 best business books of all time so even though I thought the title was a little corny I though if it was listed in the same catagory as these other books it must have some good stuff in it. And indeed it did. I bought mine used for 6 buck with shipping.
There are nine work strategies:
Initiative, blazing trails in the Organization's white spaces. A star performer does more than his job description implies. They look for ways to add value that is not currently being done. This idea of Initiative explains a lot to me about why some people are more successful than others.
- Seek out Responsibility
- Undertake extra efforts for the benefit of coworkers
- Stick tenaciously to an idea and follow it through
- Willingly assume some personal risk in taking on new responsibility
Knowing who Knows, plugging into the nowledge Network. I don't have to know everything, just have a relationship with someone who does.
Self Management, seams to me this is also Initiative.
Get the big picture
Followership: though not a real word here means to check your ego at the door.
Small L leadership i a big L world.True leaders are at all levels of the organization, not just the top.
Teamwork, getting real about teams
Organizational savvy, who is really in charge and has influence?
Show and tell, If you don't present yourself well all is lost.
All in all I would give this book 4 out of 5 stars. It has a lot of information that is in a lot of book but hey it is from the early 90s so it was first. The big thing that I saw was, I have never been talented or brilliant but I have always had Initiative and that has certainly served me well. So buy this book and I really think it will help you.
