Book Review: 2 books on the Revolutionary War
This week I read a few books including this book on the Revolutionary war. I really wanted to get a firm grasp on what happened during that time and this book is beautifully put together with facts, maps and pictures. After reading it I found myself wanting to know more about the relationship George Washington had with Benedict Arnold. Buy it at amazon, I paid twice as much at Barnes and Nobel.
Revolutions usually go this way (like the French and Russian Russians): Kings and aristocrats get fat and lazy off of peasants, peasants starve, peasants rise up and kill the king. But the American Revelution was different. There was a new social class that had rarely existed in history, a middle class. This middle class wanted the freedom to grow to their full potential. So the conditions that lead to the Revolutionary war were far less severe than that of people in other countries. People were not starving, it would be a revolution of Ideas more than anything else or any other revolution.
This is the Book that got me started learning about the Revolutionary war but it stops at 1776. But what an outstanding book! I am grateful to live a country where the idea of freedom was the motivating factor in fighting for independence. These were not super heroes but men who had all kinds of different motives. But they were truly great men who pushed the revolution forward.
