A while ago I had a kid come up to me and say “Scott, I have to talk to you tonight, it’s important.” It was during club so I had to put him off to later. That night he prepared me, “I have something major to tell you. Scott I am a Lutheran, but I want to be a Christian.” I had to control myself so I would not laugh since he was completely serious. I explained that the two are not mutually exclusive and that he not only could be both but one at least lead to the other. It was very fun.
It reminded me how un-churched the people I work with are. In his mind the two were separate because his family was “Lutheran” but to him at the time they were not “Christians”. I prayed with him for the 3rd or 4th time to accept the Lord. It is like the more he learns about grace and forgiveness the more of himself he is able to give to God. I love to lead people in prayers that give their lives to Christ. I am recognizing more and more that developing a relationship with the Lord is a process and God knows that. It is not my job to figure out when someone has “gotten saved” rather I will do all I can to move everyone I come in contact with closer to Jesus. Living along side someone and showing them faith proves to be the best way to do that.
